Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement is a minimally invasive procedure used to insert a feeding tube directly into the stomach for individuals who cannot eat or swallow food normally due to illness, injury, or surgery. This is typically done for long-term nutritional support.
Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement is a minimally invasive procedure used to insert a feeding tube directly into the stomach through the abdominal wall. This allows for long-term enteral nutrition in patients who cannot eat or swallow normally.
A percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube is a feeding tube that’s surgically inserted through the abdomen and into the stomach. It’s used when a person is unable to eat or drink enough, or swallow safely.
PEG tubes are used for patients with:
1. Neurological disorders (e.g., stroke, ALS, Parkinson’s disease) causing difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia).
2. Head and neck cancers that obstruct normal swallowing.
3. Severe malnutrition or chronic conditions requiring prolonged nutritional support.
4. Gastrointestinal disorders affecting normal digestion or absorption.
Preparation:
Fasting for at least 6-8 hours before the procedure.
Sedation or local anesthesia is administered.
Endoscope Insertion:
A flexible tube with a camera is inserted through the mouth into the stomach.
Stomach Inflation & Site Selection:
The stomach is inflated with air for better visibility.
The abdominal wall is identified for tube insertion.
PEG Tube Placement:
A small incision is made in the abdominal wall.
A guidewire is passed through the incision into the stomach.
The feeding tube is inserted and secured.
Completion & Recovery:
The procedure takes 20-30 minutes.
Patients are monitored for a few hours before discharge or hospital stay if needed.
1. Mild pain or discomfort at the insertion site.
2. Potential complications: infection, leakage, or tube dislodgement.
3. Proper tube care includes regular cleaning and flushing to prevent blockage.
4. Follow-up appointments ensure correct placement and function.
